A 52-year-old Toronto man is facing fraud charges after a fraud investigation involving forged vehicle ownership documents in Ajax, Durham Regional Police say. On Oct. 20, 2026, officers responded to a fraud-in-progress call at ServiceOntario after the suspect provided what employees believed to be fraudulent documentation to transfer ownership of a 2019 Dodge Caravan from the victim.
ServiceOntario employees noticed the ownership document had not been signed by the registered owner, police say. The suspect was seen leaving the office and going to his vehicle alone, then returned a short time later with the same documents, which now had a signature, and gave them to an employee, who contacted police. Employees reported the accused had attended the location on several previous occasions and was believed to have registered vehicles using fraudulent documentation.
Ion Boana, 52, of Toronto, is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document and altering a document to defraud. He was released on an undertaking with conditions. The charges have not been proven in court. Police believe there may be additional victims and ask anyone with information to contact D/Cst. Taylor of the Durham Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5283.
