Ajax Public Library Board chair Piyali Correya and fellow board member Rebecca McCaughey have resigned, citing an irreparable breakdown of trust and confidence with Ajax Council and staff, INsauga reported on October 26.
Correya, who had been appointed chair in 2022, offered her resignation on October 6, and McCaughey resigned the day before, according to the report.
The resignations follow a dispute over Correya's appointment: Ajax Council voted on May 21 to revoke her appointment and remove her from the board, citing repeated contraventions of the board's governance process policy, while the board reinstated her at a special closed-session meeting on July 27, a move the town disputed, saying council, not the board, holds authority over appointments and revocations.
The board is now headed by new chair Pia Kaukoranta Vahabi, who thanked both departing members for their service, and the board is actively recruiting new members, INsauga reports. Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier said the town does not recognize the board's reinstatement as legitimate and that council and staff would remain focused on broader community priorities.
