Ajax: library board chair and trustee resign after rocky dealings with council

Ajax Public Library Board chair Piyali Correya and trustee Rebecca McCaughey have both resigned, citing an irreparable breakdown of trust with council. The resignations follow a rocky five months that included council's May vote to revoke Correya's appointment.

Two Ajax Public Library Board members have resigned separately following what the Durham Region news site describes as a rocky five-month relationship with council. Trustee Rebecca McCaughey resigned in an October 5 letter citing 'an irreparable breakdown of trust and confidence' between herself and most council members as well as certain town staff.

Board chair Piyali Correya resigned October 6, saying good governance requires integrity in dealings, meaningful and open discussions and the ability to exercise independent judgment, and that she no longer had confidence those conditions existed.

The resignations follow council's May vote to revoke Correya's appointment as trustee and her leadership role — a move Correya disputed, arguing the board runs independently of the town. In September, council approved a new recruitment policy giving only Ajax staff the job of recommending board appointees. The town declined to comment; new chair Pia Kaukoranta Vahabi thanked both for their service, and the board is seeking new members.
