Ajax earns Silver Bicycle Friendly Community status again

The Town of Ajax has again earned 'Silver' status as a Bicycle Friendly Community in the Share the Road Cycling Coalition's 2026 awards, presented at the Ontario Bike Summit — its third Silver designation since 2017. Ajax was recognized for its 180-plus kilometre cycling network and an e-scooter and e-bike pilot that has topped 70,000 trips since 2023.

The Town of Ajax has again been recognized as a 'Silver' Bicycle Friendly Community by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, as part of the 2026 Bicycle Friendly Community Awards presented each year at the Ontario Bike Summit. The awards recognize municipalities showing leadership in safe, accessible, connected communities through cycling infrastructure, education, planning and engagement.

Ajax is one of seven Ontario municipalities holding Silver status, alongside Whitby, Burlington, Caledon, Hamilton, Mississauga and Oakville. The town first earned Silver in 2017, and this marks its third Silver designation. Communities are assessed on infrastructure, education, encouragement, enforcement, equity, planning and evaluation; Ajax scored high for its cycling network extending more than 180 kilometres and an e-scooter and e-bike pilot program that has recorded more than 70,000 trips since 2023.

Mayor Shaun Collier said the recognition reflects "our ongoing commitment to making Ajax a better-connected and accessible community," noting cycling investment creates more opportunities for residents and visitors. Active Transportation Coordinator Armi De Francia said maintaining Silver status recognizes the continued efforts to improve cycling in Ajax, and De Francia also received the Norma Moores Award at the Ontario Bike Summit. Toronto and Kitchener earned Gold this year while Ottawa and Waterloo earned Platinum.
