DSBRT construction ramps up on Kingston Road in Ajax with new lane restrictions

Durham Region is adding lane restrictions, lane shifts and signal changes at four Kingston Road intersections in Ajax as Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit station construction continues until late spring 2027.

Durham Region is continuing construction on the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit project on Kingston Road (Durham Regional Highway 2) between Rotherglen Road and Galea Drive in Ajax, the Region announced Oct. 20. Additional lane restrictions, lane shifts and signal changes are being implemented at intersections along the Kingston Road corridor, with some areas reduced to a single lane.

The affected intersections are Kingston Road at Westney Road, Chapman Drive/Ritchie Avenue, Harwood Avenue and Salem Road. The Region says the restrictions are needed to accommodate construction of centre-median bus rapid transit stations, and that changes to traffic signal timings - including offset left-turn lanes and fully protected left-turn signals - are also being made to improve safety for motorists.

Work is expected to continue until late spring 2027, when the new permanent lane configurations will be implemented, with weather possibly affecting the schedule. The project is partially funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, and bus routes, bus stops, sidewalks and businesses will remain open during regular operating hours for the duration of construction.
