Ontario Tech University has received a $100,000 gift from Fidelity Investments Canada ULC to strengthen cybersecurity research and support students preparing for technology careers, the university announced October 29. The gift will provide scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Business and Information Technology, and support cybersecurity research through the university's Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems.
The contribution includes $30,000 for undergraduate scholarships in select business and IT programs, which the university says will provide $60,000 in Fidelity Investments Canada Scholarships through its undergraduate scholarship matching program, and $20,000 for graduate scholarships, providing four $5,000 scholarships. The remaining $50,000 will go to the cybersecurity institute to advance research and create structured, research-based learning opportunities for students in fintech cybersecurity.
The institute brings together researchers, students and partners to address cybersecurity challenges facing businesses and communities, combining technological innovation with legal, ethical and social perspectives, according to the university. Dean Carolyn McGregor said cybersecurity is increasingly a business and societal challenge as well as a technical one, and that the gift will strengthen research that helps organizations respond to evolving digital risks while giving students opportunities to build skills for a technology-driven future. The gift builds on Fidelity's broader relationship with Ontario Tech, including corporate training, co-op and internship opportunities and sponsorship of Ontario Tech Community Day.
