Ontario Tech University says the Government of Canada has renewed Dr. Peter Lewis's Tier-2 Canada Research Chair in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence for a new five-year term, valued at $500,000.

Lewis joined Ontario Tech as a Canada Research Chair in 2021. In his first term he founded the university's Trustworthy AI Lab and led the creation of the Mindful AI Research Institute, secured about $2.5 million in research funding, trained 21 highly qualified personnel and produced 24 peer-reviewed publications, the university says.

For the 2026-2031 term, his research will focus on trust empowerment, reflective AI and social intelligence, work aimed at helping people make better trust decisions about AI systems and at AI that can adapt to social contexts and communicate uncertainty more effectively.
