Ontario Power Generation (OPG) will host its free WattNext Nuclear Career Expo on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, 21 Avenue of Champions, on Durham College and Ontario Tech University's Oshawa campus. Pre-registration is not required, and the evening is open to families, students, jobseekers and education professionals.
According to OPG, visitors will be able to meet people working in Ontario's nuclear sector, explore interactive exhibits, attend presentations about the future of energy, hear career stories, and learn about education and training pathways into roles ranging from skilled trades and technology to engineering, operations, business and corporate services. The expo is part of OPG's WattNext energy education and career development program, run in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre and Ontario Tech University.
OPG says the event comes as Ontario's electricity demand is expected to increase by as much as 90 per cent by 2050, with its nuclear program including the recently completed refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, life-extension work set to begin at Pickering, small modular reactors at the Darlington New Nuclear Project, and exploration of new large-scale generation at Wesleyville in Port Hope.
