Sunil Singh of Pickering, a former high school teacher turned author and public speaker, has opened his own online math school, Math Treehouse. Singh left his teaching job at Ajax High School in 2013, disillusioned with how mathematics was taught, and now aims to make math compelling and fun through storytelling.
Singh's path included a planned math store and school in Unionville that was destroyed by fire in 2015, a 2017 Globe and Mail op-ed on quitting teaching, a speaking invitation from the Fields Institute, four books, and talks on mathematics around the world.
Through Math Treehouse he will teach classes globally, capped at five students, working with homeschool parents and parents of in-school kids — covering topics like game theory, graph theory and number theory. Some classes are already underway, with formal registration planned for January.
