Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe has issued an official statement in response to the tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, calling the incident one that has left him "shocked and heartbroken." The statement, datelined October 18, 2026, was issued on behalf of the City of Pickering, its members of council and residents.

"I extend our deepest sympathies to the members of the Canadian Armed Forces, their families and loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy," the mayor said. The statement also thanked first responders and medical professionals providing care and support.

The statement follows the fire that broke out in the base's training area on October 17 during a training exercise. The Royal Canadian Legion, in its own October 18 statement, confirmed the incident resulted in lost lives and many injuries, and said flags will be flown at half-mast at Legion branches across the country in remembrance.
