The Regional Municipality of Durham is installing new fully protected left-turn signals for traffic in all directions at the intersection of Brock Road (Regional Road 1) and Taunton Road (Regional Road 4) in Pickering, the Region announced in support of its Durham Vision Zero road-safety plan.
Protected left-turn signals use a dedicated green arrow so drivers turn left only when oncoming traffic is stopped, reducing the risk of collisions between left-turning and oncoming vehicles. The Region says the signals will help improve safety at the busy Pickering intersection.
Construction is underway now and the modified signals are expected to be operational by the end of 2026. Drivers are asked to use caution for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and work crews in the area.
Durham Vision Zero is the Region's long-term plan to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Durham roadways. The Region publishes a live interactive map of current construction projects and traffic information at durham.ca/TrafficWatch.
