The City of Pickering says it has reached an important milestone in its long-standing effort to bring Frenchman's Bay into public ownership and secure the wetland's long-term protection, announcing that the key parties are now in place to establish a framework for a funding agreement and management model.

The collaborative effort brings together the City, the Government of Canada — including the department of Environment, Climate Change and Nature and Parks Canada — the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Mayor Kevin Ashe said discussions with Indigenous community partners are continuing, and the city looks forward to sharing more details as final agreements are worked out.

Frenchman's Bay is one of the most significant coastal wetlands on Lake Ontario's north shore. Unlike most water bodies, large portions of the bay have been privately owned by the Pickering Harbour Company since 1853 under a pre-Confederation Crown charter.
