The Durham Catholic District School Board recognized Trustee Jim McCafferty during a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, honouring his contributions to Catholic education and the community.
After 35 consecutive years serving as trustee for the City of Pickering, McCafferty is retiring from the board. He championed student success and well-being, helped strengthen Catholic education across Durham Region, and served on the board's Special Education Advisory Committee and the Minister of Education's Special Advisory Council.
At the celebration he received a special blessing and a letter of congratulations from Bishop Vincent Nguyen, presented by Fr. Eduardo on behalf of the Archdiocese. His honours include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the OCSTA Award of Merit and the Ron St. Marie Council for Exceptional Children Award. With school board trustees on the Oct. 26 municipal election ballot, his retirement means Pickering's Catholic trustee seat will be contested without its 35-year incumbent.
