Friends and colleagues gathered at the Oshawa Golf Club this week to celebrate John Henry, who is stepping down as Regional Chair of Durham Region after 20 years of public service, including eight years as chair, Durham Radio News reported.
Henry's final day in office is Nov. 14. The province will appoint a new Regional Chair, though it is not clear when that announcement will be made.
Oshawa MP Rhonda Kirkland said she has worked alongside Henry in many capacities over the years, including volunteering together in support of causes across the community, and that his care for Oshawa and Durham Region has always been evident. Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy thanked Henry for his dedication and for the collaborative approach he brought to working with all eight municipalities, saying his leadership helped move important priorities forward and strengthen communities.
Henry provided leadership on improved health care, homelessness, mental health, affordable housing and more, advocating for residents and organizations across Durham, according to the report.
