Durham Regional Police have arrested a 39-year-old Brampton woman in connection with an auto-financing fraud scam at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Durham Region. According to police, Skylar Porter applied online on Sept. 30 to purchase a 2027 Mercedes SUV using another person's identification, submitting images of ID documents including a Canadian passport that carried her photograph but identified the victim as the holder.
Police say the application was approved and financing was arranged through a financial institution, but the victim was notified of the purchase before the vehicle was released and reported it to police and the dealership as identity fraud. Porter was taken into custody without incident on Oct. 8 when she returned to the dealership to complete the transaction and take possession of the vehicle.
Porter is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, personation, possession of an identity document and possession of cocaine, and was released on an undertaking. The charges have not been proven in court. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Stuart of the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5353, or Durham Regional Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
