The Municipality of Clarington says registration is open for the first season of programs at the Bowmanville Community Complex, formerly the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre. Programs in the complex’s dome are scheduled to begin October 13. Programs for the gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms will be announced later as additional spaces are finished.

A free open house is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 1 to 5 p.m. at 1 West Side Drive, with entry from Green Road. Residents can see the FIFA-sized multi-sport dome, take part in free activities, meet staff and learn about programs. Clarington says more than 1,400 people contributed ideas while the programs were being planned.

For young families, the program list includes Mini Kicks, Sports Explorers and Stories and Sports for ages 2 to 4; Games Galore for ages 2 to 5; and Movers and Shakers for ages 2 to 4. Preschool Active drop-ins are listed for children from walking age to 6, while Family Sports is for ages 3 to 12. Stroller Fit is also available for parents and caregivers.

For kids and pre-teens, listings include Move and Groove for ages 4 to 6, Kids in Action for ages 5 to 8, Fitness for Kids for ages 6 to 12, Dodgeball and Flag Games: FUNdamentals for ages 6 to 9, and Flag Games: Learn to Train for ages 9 to 12. For teens and adults, the list includes Circuit Training, Functional Strength Fusion, Turf and Track Bootcamp and Walk and Weights for ages 13 and older, plus Soccer, Flag Football and Ultimate Frisbee for ages 18 and older.

Clarington Sports Leagues will begin with an adult co-ed indoor soccer league delivered with Darlington Soccer Club. The notice says individuals can sign up to be matched with a team, or friends, neighbours and coworkers can create a roster together. Her Game, Our Goal offers grant-funded basketball, soccer and tennis programs for girl-identified youth; space is limited.

A new Swim, Skate & Walk membership is described as covering swimming, skating and access to the complex’s three-lane indoor walking track. Clarington says three laps add up to more than a kilometre. Annual memberships can be purchased at a recreation centre, and multi-visit passes are available online.

Programs for older adults include Walking Soccer, Pole Walking Plus, Osteo Fitness and Stretch, each listed for ages 55 and older. The complex will operate as a cash-free facility. Clarington says the complex will be more than 172,000 square feet once complete and is expected to receive more than 675,000 visits each year.

Some amenities are planned for later phases: the outdoor refrigerated skating trail and event space are scheduled for winter 2026/2027, while the inclusive playground, splash pad and aquatics centre are planned for 2027. The existing lacrosse bowl is expected to reopen in 2027.
