Bowmanville cement plant to get Canada's largest behind-the-meter battery

Rodan Energy and St. Marys Cement have agreed to build a 50 megawatt-hour battery storage system at the Bowmanville cement plant, which the companies say will be Canada's largest behind-the-meter battery installation to date.

A 50 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system will be built at St. Marys Cement's Bowmanville facility under a long-term agreement announced Tuesday by Rodan Energy Solutions and St. Marys Cement Inc. (Canada), a subsidiary of Votorantim Cimentos North America. The companies say it will become Canada's largest behind-the-meter battery installation to date.

The battery system will let the plant reduce its demand on the electricity grid during peak-use periods while maintaining essential operations, charging during lower-demand periods and discharging when demand is highest. The project supports the company's sustainability roadmap, including a commitment to net-zero concrete by 2050 and interim targets for 2030, the companies say.

Rodan Energy will develop, own and operate the system, optimizing it through its FlexOps platform, and will assume the development capital and operational risk. St. Marys Cement will receive a fully managed, long-term energy solution with no upfront capital outlay, according to the announcement. The Bowmanville plant has operated since 1968.
