Clarington: 5-day demolition notice issued for Bowmanville West Beach home

The Municipality of Clarington has issued a demolition notice for the buildings at 48 West Beach Road in Bowmanville, with demolition set to begin the week of October 26. The five-day demolition is part of the municipality's Bowmanville waterfront vision and public-access plans.

The Municipality of Clarington is moving to demolish the buildings at 48 West Beach Road in Bowmanville, according to a notice dated October 21 from the municipality's building operations department reported by the Durham Post. Cardan Demolition and Excavation is scheduled to begin demolition the week of October 26, 2026, weather permitting, with the work expected to take five days.

The notice states the buildings and utilities have been decommissioned and that demolition will proceed in accordance with all applicable environmental, regulatory, and safety requirements, following social media concerns about the short timeline. The municipality acquired 48 West Beach Road in 2026 and says the demolition is an important step toward the Bowmanville waterfront vision and public access.

The move follows a January 2024 council order to demolish two vacated West Beach cottages after a municipal inspection found them unsafe. Clarington's waterfront development plan spans some 34 kilometres of Lake Ontario shoreline across Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle.
