Metrolinx contractors are moving toward the next major milestone in extending GO train service to Bowmanville, with access roads now complete at the Green Road bridge site and crews preparing to construct the bridge's structural foundations.
The new above-grade rail bridge at Green Road will carry the Lakeshore East line nearly 20 kilometres deeper into Durham Region as part of the Bowmanville Extension.
Work is also underway on a new bridge carrying Simcoe Street over the tracks in Oshawa, which is needed to give trains access to the new Central Oshawa station. That project is near the midway point of a two-year closure of Simcoe Street on either side of the CPKC tracks, between Albany and Avenue streets north of Mill Street.
Metrolinx's Bowmanville Extension project page lists the start of construction of the new Green Road, Wilson Road and Farewell Creek bridges among its upcoming on-site milestones, with Courtice Road and Harmony Creek bridges to follow.
The extension, approved years ago, will add stations at Thornton's Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice and Bowmanville when complete.
