Rodan Energy Solutions Inc. and St. Marys Cement Inc. (Canada) announced on October 27, 2026, a long-term agreement to develop, own and optimize a 50 megawatt-hour (MWh) behind-the-meter battery energy storage system at St. Marys Cement's Bowmanville facility, the companies said in a joint release. The companies describe the project as Canada's largest behind-the-meter battery installation to date.
The battery system will let the plant cut its demand on the electricity grid during peak-use periods while keeping essential operations running, the companies said. The batteries can be charged when demand is lower and drawn on during high peak periods, which also reduces grid demand when the carbon intensity of electricity can be higher.
Rodan Energy will develop, own and operate the system and optimize it through its FlexOps platform, assuming the development capital and operational risk, the companies said. St. Marys Cement will receive a fully managed, long-term energy solution with no upfront capital outlay, and the project is expected to deliver energy cost savings and strengthen the plant's operational resilience.
The Bowmanville plant has operated since 1968, and the project supports the parent company Votorantim Cimentos North America's sustainability roadmap, including its commitment to net-zero concrete by 2050 and interim 2030 targets, the companies said. It is the company's first behind-the-meter battery storage project of this type in North America and will serve as a basis for evaluating similar opportunities at other operations.
