Lakeridge Health, in partnership with the Ontario government and Infrastructure Ontario, has awarded PCL Partnerships the contract to design, build and finance the redeveloped Bowmanville Hospital, Lakeridge Health says. The award is a green light for construction to move forward, with PCL Partnerships beginning to mobilize and prepare the site this fall and major construction starting in the new year.
The redevelopment will more than double the size of Bowmanville Hospital, Lakeridge Health says. It will add private patient rooms, new clinics for patients who do not need an overnight stay, a haemodialysis centre for people with kidney disease, a rooftop helipad and Level 3 critical care capacity, the highest level of care for patients who are critically ill or injured. The hospital will remain open and continue providing care throughout construction, Lakeridge Health says.
"Today marks a defining moment for the Lakeridge Health Bowmanville Hospital and the future of health care in Durham Region," said Lakeridge Health president and CEO Cynthia Davis. The contract includes BuyOntario provisions and opportunities for local businesses and skilled unionized trades, Lakeridge Health says, and the team was selected through an open, fair and competitive process.
