A new cafe called Christine's has opened at the Abilities Centre in Whitby, named after the centre's co-founder Christine Elliott, the former Ontario deputy premier, health minister and Whitby MPP. Elliott was on hand Wednesday morning to cut the ribbon on the town's newest coffee shop.

Elliott, with her late husband Jim Flaherty, was the driving force behind the Abilities Centre — envisioned in 2006 as a haven for people of all abilities, with the Victoria Street centre opening in 2012. 'This really is a tremendous day for the Abilities Centre and all its members,' Elliott said at the opening, thanking the centre for naming the cafe after her.

Christine's is located on the ground floor of the Abilities Centre and is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., seven days a week.
