Unity in Diversity hosted what organizers are calling Durham's largest-ever Garba celebration, Durham Garba Fest 2026 – Whitby, at the Abilities Centre in Whitby on Sunday, October 11.

About 2,000 attendees from across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area took part in an evening of live music, dancing, food and prizes, with Garba artist Nick Pandya performing Garba in Whitby for the first time. The event fell on the first day of Navratri.

The celebration also raised money for charity: organizers presented a $2,001 cheque to the Lakeridge Health Foundation during the evening.

Unity in Diversity's Pankaj Panchal said the turnout showed the strength of the community's cultural spirit in Durham.
