The three candidates for mayor of Whitby — Chris Leahy, Harshini Rajmohan and Elizabeth Roy — have laid out their top priorities ahead of the October 26 municipal election, in answers provided to Whitby This Week and presented in alphabetical order.
Leahy is pitching a two-year Whitby property tax freeze and says he will fight a proposed 10 per cent Durham Region tax increase. He also proposes cutting waste, reducing the mayor's $318,666 compensation, creating a lobbyist registry and an Auditor General, and launching The Whitby Foundation to raise $100 million for local charities and arts groups.
Rajmohan is stressing affordability, responsible growth matched with infrastructure, accountability at town hall, protecting the waterfront and staying accessible to residents.
Roy, the incumbent, is stressing an affordable, safe and future-ready Whitby, a new community strategic plan, advancing the new hospital with the province and Lakeridge Health, and addressing homelessness and food insecurity.
