Pickering: SIU finds no grounds to charge officer after July arrest injury

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says its director found no reasonable grounds to believe an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a 39-year-old man's broken nose during a July 9 arrest in Pickering. York Regional Police officers had tracked a vehicle connected to a break and enter in Vaughan to a parking lot in Pickering, the unit says.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a 39-year-old man's arrest and injury in Pickering on July 9, 2026.

In the morning of July 9, 2026, York Regional Police officers, with the help of the York Regional Police helicopter, tracked a vehicle connected to a break and enter in Vaughan to a parking lot in Pickering, the unit says. Officers surrounded the vehicle, removed both occupants, and used force against both people on the ground before handcuffing them and taking them into custody, the unit says.

After initially refusing medical treatment, one of the people, a 39-year-old man, was eventually taken to hospital and diagnosed with a broken nose, the Special Investigations Unit says. The unit says the full director's report is available on its website.
