The City of Oshawa says the TeachingCity Oshawa 2025/2026 Annual Snapshot is now available, covering the partnership’s ninth year. The partnership brings together Oshawa, Durham College, Ontario Tech University, Trent University Durham GTA and the University of Toronto’s Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering.
Durham College photography students created images inspired by Oshawa’s 2024–2027 Strategic Plan. The city says students explored the community and received access to city spaces, events, businesses, programs and services. Oshawa now maintains a curated collection of the students’ work for future communications.
Ontario Tech University’s Institute for Cybersecurity and Resilient Systems continues to work with the city’s Information Technology Services team on a Security Operations Centre. Students monitor the city’s public Wi-Fi for threats and track recurring issues for the cybersecurity team; the student team also receives training from Fortinet and Trend Micro. The city describes the work as a pathway toward entry-level cybersecurity roles with municipal and other local employers.
TeachingCity partners also contributed to development of Oshawa’s Culture Plan. The city reports campus pop-ups at three local post-secondary institutions and student-led focus groups using a Community Conversation Toolkit. After the plan’s action and implementation work is finalized, faculty researchers from each institution are expected to help validate it, review its parts and refine action items.
The city provided 111 work-integrated learning opportunities through placements, practicums and co-ops. In its snapshot, the city says students developed applied skills while bringing ideas and perspectives to departments working on municipal initiatives.
TeachingCity says its partners work on Oshawa urban issues through innovation, applied research, collaboration and experiential learning. The annual snapshot highlights selected projects and activities from the 2025/2026 year; it does not claim that the projects have resolved the city issues they address.
