A 62-year-old woman driving a white Volvo sedan southbound on Niagara Drive struck a daycare worker and five children under three when she turned left onto Sheridan Street at about 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, Durham Regional Police say.

The group was walking northbound on the east sidewalk and crossing the street when the turning vehicle struck them, police say. Niagara Drive has no traffic control at that location.

A two-year-old was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious, life-threatening injuries, where police say the child remains in stable condition. The daycare worker and one child were taken to local hospitals with serious, non-life-threatening injuries; three other children were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, according to the release. She was taken to hospital as a precaution. Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene.

Police say they are still investigating the circumstances of the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Const. Hoevenaars of the Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520, ext. 5255.
