The City of Oshawa is expanding its urban tree canopy with $560,860 in funding from the Government of Canada through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Growing Canada's Community Canopies initiative, covering two tree-planting projects across the city.
A $342,360 grant is funding 1,600 tree plantings in parks and greenspaces: 600 large-caliper trees went in last fall, with 1,000 more being planted this year in priority areas affected by Emerald Ash Borer and canopy loss. Species including Red Oak and Kentucky Coffeetree were selected for climate resilience and biodiversity. A second $218,500 grant funded 40 large-caliper trees at Rotary Park.
The release quotes Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter, FCM President Tim Tierney and Secretary of State (Nature) Nathalie Provost. The Growing Canada's Community Canopies initiative, announced in May 2024, will support the planting of at least 1.2 million new trees across Canada by the end of March 2031.
