The Region of Durham says programs and services will be affected Wednesday, September 30, for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby will close, including Provincial Offences Courts and offices, the Ontario Works Office, the Child Care and Early Years Division Office, regional front counters and call-centre services. Family Services Durham locations and Ontario Works offices in Ajax, Oshawa and Uxbridge will also close.
Adult Day Programs at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa and Lakeview Manor in Beaverton will be closed. The Region notes that its Port Perry site at 431 Paxton Street is always closed on Wednesdays. Waste management facilities in Brock, Scugog and Oshawa will close, along with the Clarington Household Special Waste Depot and the Waste Management Centre in Whitby for new and replacement green bins.
Health Department services that will be unavailable include the Oral Health Clinic and Office in Oshawa, sexual health clinics, breastfeeding clinics and immunization clinics. Water sample drop-off and pickup will pause from September 29 at 8:30 a.m. until October 1 at 8:30 a.m. at Regional Headquarters in Whitby, the Health Department office in Port Perry, Uxbridge Municipal Office and Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville. The regular schedule resumes October 1 at 8:30 a.m.
Durham Region Outreach will continue supporting people experiencing homelessness. The Region lists HomelessHelp@durham.ca and 905-668-4113, extension 5510; residents can also call 311 within Durham Region and ask for extension 5510. The toll-free number is 1-800-372-1102, extension 5510. Waste collection, Durham Region Transit and Regional directly operated early learning and child-care centres will continue without changes.
Online Provincial Offences Court tools remain available for fine payments, trial requests, early-resolution requests and disclosure requests; a 24-hour drop box is available at the south entrance of Regional Headquarters. Court email and services will not be monitored during the closure. Prosecution Services online tools remain available to order disclosure and schedule pre-trial meetings for Part III offences.
