The Region of Durham is marking National Indigenous Veterans Day today, honouring First Nations, Inuit and Métis Veterans whose contributions have not always received the recognition they deserve, according to a statement issued on behalf of Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry.
The statement says Indigenous Veterans served with courage and distinction, yet returned home to injustices and barriers they should not have faced, and that recognizing their experiences ensures their stories, sacrifices and contributions are given their place in shared history.
In honour of National Indigenous Veterans Day, flags at Regional Headquarters will fly at half-mast today (November 8) and remain lowered until November 12.
The statement says the Region remembers those who served, reflects on the truths that continue to impact Indigenous Veterans and their communities today, and recommits itself to reconciliation through learning, respectful partnership and meaningful collaboration.
