The Town of Whitby has shared events and service information for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 30. From September 8 to October 6, residents can pick up an orange ribbon and a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation card at Whitby Public Library Central Library, 405 Dundas Street, and tie the ribbon to the fence outside Presse Café.
A free workshop, Walking Together: A Journey Through Truth, Reconciliation, and Indigenous Experience, is scheduled for Friday, September 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the 55+ Recreation Centre, 801 Brock Street South, in the Upper Activity Room. Register with code 68200. Social worker Dr. Peter Menzies will lead the session on issues facing Indigenous Peoples, including colonialism, traditions, urban challenges and building partnerships.
Town Hall and Garden Street Branch in-person and phone services will close at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, and reopen at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, October 1. All Whitby Public Library locations will be closed on September 30, although book returns will remain open and digital content will be available 24/7.
Whitby says all Town recreation facilities will be open on September 30 and waste collection will continue on its regular schedule. Residents should put garbage, green bins and blue boxes out one day after their regular pickup day. The Town points residents to its waste collection calendar and Waste Buddy app to confirm their pickup day.
The Town also notes its commemorative orange crosswalk at King and Dundas Streets and encourages residents to wear an orange shirt on September 30. Whitby says its social media channels will be dedicated to the day and Orange Shirt Day.
