Durham Regional Police Service says its Homicide Unit is investigating Durham Region's third homicide of 2026 after a 23-year-old Oshawa man died near Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road East.
Officers from Central West Division were called to the north Oshawa area on Saturday, May 9, at about 8:10 p.m. after reports of an armed person. When police arrived, they found the victim suffering from traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the fatal injuries happened during a physical altercation involving two groups of males outside the Tim Hortons at 2700 Simcoe Street North. According to DRPS, the suspect and several other males left the area on foot, heading south and east from the restaurant.
An extensive search followed with support from Air1 and the DRPS K9 Unit, but police said the suspects were not located. Residents in the area were told to expect an increased police presence while officers continued the investigation.
Investigators said they believe the incident was isolated and that there was no broader public-safety concern at the time of the release. The victim's name was not released by police.
DRPS is asking anyone who was in the area between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. to contact investigators, especially people with cell phone video, dash-cam footage, surveillance footage, or information that may help police identify the people involved.
