Durham Regional Police Service says its Homicide Unit is investigating after a 23-year-old Oshawa man died in what police identified as Durham Region's third homicide of 2026.
Police said members of Central West Division were called at about 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, to the area of Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road East for an armed-person call. Officers found the victim with traumatic injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to DRPS, two groups of males had been involved in a physical altercation outside the Tim Hortons at 2700 Simcoe Street North. Police said the victim suffered fatal injuries during that altercation.
The suspect and several other males fled from the Tim Hortons on foot, heading south and east. DRPS said Air1 and the K9 Unit assisted in an extensive search, but the suspects were not located.
Investigators said they believe the incident was isolated and that there were no broader public-safety concerns at the time of the release. Police also said the victim's name was not being released.
Anyone who was in the area between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. with cell phone video, dash-cam footage, surveillance footage, or information is asked to contact Det. Laura Middleton of the DRPS Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5418. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
