Durham police pull Crime Stoppers links after P3 tip-platform breach

Durham Regional Police say they are aware of new information about a cybersecurity incident involving P3, the third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers programs to receive and manage anonymous tips. Police say P3 operates independently of DRPS and the incident did not involve a confirmed intrusion into DRPS internal systems. As a precaution, DRPS has removed Crime Stoppers references from its public-facing channels while it assesses the information.

Durham Regional Police say they are aware of new information regarding a cybersecurity incident involving P3, a third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers programs to receive and manage anonymous tips.

DRPS says it works with Durham Regional Crime Stoppers in support of community safety, but they are separate organizations. The P3 platform is operated independently of DRPS, and police say the cybersecurity incident did not involve a confirmed intrusion into DRPS internal information systems.

Police say they recognize the new information may be concerning, particularly for people who provided information to Crime Stoppers expecting their anonymity to be protected. 'The safety, privacy and trust of members of the public are extremely important to DRPS,' the statement says.

As a precautionary measure, DRPS has removed references directing members of the public to Crime Stoppers from its public-facing channels while it assesses the new information and determines appropriate next steps. During the review, anyone wishing to report information and remain anonymous can call 905-579-1520 ext. 5802, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., to speak with a member of Intelligence Services; voicemail is available outside those hours. The public may also email info@drps.ca. In an emergency or where there is an immediate threat to public safety, call 9-1-1.
