Ontario Power Generation, in partnership with the Durham Region Health Department and Toronto Emergency Management, has completed the redistribution of potassium iodide (KI) pills to residents living within 10 kilometres of the Pickering and Darlington nuclear generating stations. Replacement packages were mailed to households in the zone earlier this year to replace the 2015 supplies that expire in 2027.
Residents within the 10 km zone should have received their new KI package. Households that have not received one, have recently moved into the area, or need extra pills can order a supply at preparetobesafe.ca. Residents within the 50 km zone should check the expiry date on their current pills and can order replacements before they expire.
A limited supply is also available at five local pharmacies: Bay Ridges Pharmacy, Pickering Medical Pharmacy and Liverpool Pharmacy in Pickering, Global Drug Mart Remedy's Rx in Bowmanville, and Courtice Pharmasave in Courtice. Expired blister packs should be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal and never flushed; the Region says all approved KI pills contain 65 mg of potassium iodide and should only be taken when directed by Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health during a nuclear emergency. More details are at preparetobesafe.ca or the Durham Health Connection Line at 905-668-2020.
