Durham Region is reminding candidates in the October 26 municipal election that corrugated plastic campaign signs can be recycled free of charge through the Region's Sign Recycling Program. Dedicated loads of signs dropped off at any of the Region's three waste management facilities after the election are accepted at no cost; loads mixed with other waste materials are subject to the regular disposal fee.

Before delivering signs, candidates must remove wooden stakes, wire mounts, nylon zip ties, metal rings and staples. Candidates considering future campaigns are encouraged to keep their signs for reuse.

The Region also advises candidates to consult their local area municipality for guidance on the placement and removal periods for temporary signs. More information on the Sign Recycling Program is available at durham.ca/WMF.
