Students at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School recently helped plant a new pollinator garden through a collaboration led by the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) and community partners. The board said the garden will support local biodiversity while giving students hands-on learning opportunities.
The project’s foundation was strengthened with community help supplying compost and mulch. Students from Henry Street High School also helped create colourful crochet squares that are to be installed on the school’s bike racks.
The garden is intended as a living classroom focused on environmental stewardship, biodiversity and conservation. Planned student activities include making rock plant markers and contributing to Bug Quest Canada, an insect-identification and field-study initiative that encourages observations and data collection in nature.
The board also presented the project as an expression of its Catholic faith and students’ responsibility to care for creation. The school plans to showcase the garden at its Meet the Teacher Night and Open House.
