Durham Regional Police say a Toronto man is wanted following a vehicle financing fraud investigation by the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit. Between May 1 and July 31, 2024, the suspect attended multiple dealerships across Durham Region and used false and fictitious information to obtain financing for three motor vehicles, police say.
No payments were made after the suspect took possession of the vehicles, and the suspect subsequently fled Canada. Two of the three vehicles were later exported. Investigators have linked the scam to an organized group involved in "criminal tourism."
Vesko Lafchis, 60, of Toronto is wanted for Fraud Over $5,000 x3, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime for the Purpose of Trafficking x2, and Disposing of Property to Avoid Creditors x2. Anyone with information is asked to contact D/Cst. Taylor of the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-579-1520, ext. 5283, or Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The allegations have not been proven in court.
