Durham Regional Police Service will increase patrols and police presence at places of worship and community gathering locations across Durham Region ahead of and during October 7, the service announced in a media advisory posted Monday. Uniformed officers will conduct enhanced patrols and maintain a visible presence at identified locations, with the measures continuing in the days following October 7.
DRPS says October 7 may be a time of heightened concern for some community members, and officers will work closely with community partners, faith-based organizations and community leaders through the period. The service says the measures are precautionary and reflect its ongoing commitment to community safety. The advisory adds that there is no place for hate, intimidation or discrimination in Durham Region, and that any hate- or bias-motivated incidents will be thoroughly investigated.
Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity: call 9-1-1 in an emergency, or contact DRPS at 1-888-579-1520 for non-emergency incidents.
