Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy says work is continuing between the province, Lakeridge Health and its partners to complete the transfer of provincial land that will host Durham Region's new hospital in Whitby.

The 50-acre site in north Whitby — south of Highway 407, west of Highway 412, east of Lake Ridge Road and north of Highway 7/Winchester Road — is currently held by the Ministry of Transportation. Roy says she has met with the provincial transportation and health ministers, as well as Whitby MPP Lorne Coe, to keep advocating for the project.

Lakeridge Health's capital planning grant applications for the project are currently under review by the Ministry of Health, according to the mayor.

Lakeridge Health selected Whitby as the preferred location for Durham's new hospital in January 2022 after a site-selection process, and in August 2024 the province announced a planning grant confirming Whitby as the hospital's location.
