The Town of Whitby is marking the 25th anniversary of National Waste Reduction Week in Canada, running Oct. 19-25, 2026, as part of Circular Economy Month. The Town is encouraging residents to reduce waste, repair items, reuse materials and support local circular economy initiatives, according to its October Green Quarterly sustainability update.

The headline local event is a Repair Cafe Crawl on Saturday, Oct. 24. Volunteer fixers will help repair small household appliances, electronics and clothing at the Whitby Public Library and The Souk, and Style Loft Boutique will offer 25 per cent off that day as part of the crawl.

Collection bins at Whitby Public Library will accept hard-to-recycle items - used writing instruments, razors, and air and home-care products - from Oct. 19 to 24. Residents who bring a reusable mug to The Souk during the week will trigger a $1 donation to Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area for each qualifying purchase.

The Town's quarterly sustainability roundup also highlights the new four-month Whitby Watt Wars energy-conservation challenge for municipal facilities, sponsored by Elexicon Energy; three fall tree-planting initiatives that added more than 1,400 native trees and shrubs to Whitby's urban forest; and a $25,000 grant to manufacturer North American Steel through the Town's Industrial Energy Challenge pilot program.
