Communities across Durham Region donated 3,000 pounds of food and raised $2,606 during this year's Hunger Action Month campaign, which ran Sept. 9 to Oct. 5 — the equivalent of 7,712 meals for people in need across the region.

The donations will support Feed the Need in Durham and other local food banks, including the Durham Community Action Group, The Salvation Army Hope, the Community Development Council Durham, Storehouse Foodbank and the Christian Faith Outreach Centre.

The results come as demand for food assistance remains high: more than 880,000 visits were made to Feed the Need in Durham's network of 70 community food programs last year, visits are up nearly 350 per cent since 2020, and one in four Durham households identifies as food insecure. Residents can keep donating to Feed the Need in Durham or their local food bank year-round. Sources: Town of Whitby, Oct. 16, 2026 (newsroom listing; appeared in-window since the 8 AM scan).
