Whitby: Central Library makes TV debut in CBC Kids Reads finale

Whitby Public Library's Central branch will make its television debut when the CBC Kids Reads 2026 finale airs on October 19 at 9 a.m. on CBC TV, CBC Gem and the CBC Kids YouTube channel.

The finale was filmed at the Central branch in September, drawing more than 2,000 community members to what library staff called one of the largest and most ambitious events in the library's history, with interactive activities, character meet-and-greets and immersive experiences.

The program brings together the competition's five shortlisted Canadian picture books, with hosts Gary the Unicorn and Cottonball announcing the winning title.

Whitby Library CEO Rhonda Jessup said the event celebrates Canadian children's literature and community spirit.

The 54,000-square-foot Central Library, which opened in 2005, previously won an Ontario Library Award and an interior design award.
