Food Basics opens first Whitby store, creates 100 jobs

Food Basics has opened its first store in Whitby, a 32,000-square-foot location at 915 Rossland Road West that employs 100 people.

Food Basics has opened its first store in Whitby, at 915 Rossland Road West. The 32,000-square-foot location is the discount grocer's 160th store in Ontario and employs a team of 100 people, according to Metro, which owns the banner.

The store opened October 8, 2026, and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. It carries Irresistible and Selection private-label products, locally sourced products, fresh meat and produce, and fresh BBQ chicken, and customers can order groceries online at Foodbasics.ca and earn Moi Rewards.

To mark the opening, Food Basics is donating $5,000 to Feed The Need In Durham, which is affiliated with Feed Ontario, to support local families and fight food insecurity.
