Whitby's Doors Open event returns this Saturday, Oct. 17, with seven sites opening free to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lineup spans heritage landmarks and new developments, from a Second World War spy-training school to the sports complex that opened just last month.
Highlights include the Camp X Memorial at Intrepid Park — the National Historic Site where more than 500 agents trained for missions behind enemy lines — with presentations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Lynde House Museum, Durham Region's oldest home (c. 1812), with costumed Whitby Historical Society interpreters and local artists at the Warren General Store; and Whitby Fire headquarters, celebrating the department's 175th year with training demos, obstacle courses and live music.
Burr Lodge (built 1855 by Whitby's second mayor James Wallace), the Station Gallery and the new Fieldgate Sports Complex round out the sites, along with a guided walking tour of the Werden's Plan heritage district departing from Brock Street South and Burns Street at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
