The Township of Uxbridge says it has identified phragmites, an invasive plant species, in Elgin Pond and plans to remove it in the coming weeks. The aggressive plant spreads quickly and can damage Ontario's biodiversity, wetlands and beaches; the province regulates it under the Invasive Species Act as a restricted species.
After reviewing its options, the township chose targeted spot spraying with the approved pesticide Habitat Aqua (PCP registration 32374) in the two affected areas around the dock and inlet of the pond, with treatment to be completed by a Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks specialist. Members of the public may submit comments to the Director under the Pesticides Act within five days of the notification, and questions can be directed to the township's Trails Department at uxbridgetrails@uxbridge.ca.
