Scugog names Grade 5 student Max Miller 2026 Junior Fire Chief

Grade 5 student Max Miller has been named Scugog's 2026 Junior Fire Chief after winning a poster contest on lithium-ion battery safety, the Township of Scugog announced.

Max Miller, a Grade 5 student, was chosen from hundreds of contest entries as Scugog's 2026 Junior Fire Chief for his creative poster on lithium-ion battery safety, supporting this year's Fire Prevention Week theme, 'Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,' according to the Township of Scugog.

As winner, Miller spent the day with Scugog firefighters — from a surprise classroom announcement to activating his school's fire alarm and helping supervise a school-wide evacuation drill — then visited the Township Municipal Office to meet Mayor Wilma Wotten and senior staff.

Local businesses marked the day with a brand-new bicycle from Port Perry Canadian Tire and a McDonald's lunch. Fire Prevention Officer Kristy-Lynn Pankhurst says the program is a fun way to encourage young people to become fire safety advocates.
