The Durham Run for the Cure returned to Oshawa's Lakeview Park on Sunday, October 4, 2026, with survivors, families, volunteers and community members taking part in 5-kilometre and 1-kilometre runs and walks to raise money for breast cancer research and support services, according to Wesal TV. Chantelle Adair, the Durham run's fundraising and stewardship coordinator, has participated for about 27 years, inspired by her mother's 2002 diagnosis.
Adair told Wesal TV that Oshawa matters because people affected by breast cancer in Durham Region can access services including the breast assessment centre at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and Hearth Place, the support centre where survivors Laurie Armstrong and others found community during treatment. Organizers said this was the final year the event will be held at Lakeview Park, with parking challenges cited as a reason and other locations under consideration for next year.
The 2026 event was the 35th annual Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, with more than 50 communities across Canada taking part; nationally, more than 65,000 participants and volunteers raised over $18 million, the society said. Local teams included a more than 50-member group from Oxygen Fitness in South Whitby that raised over $9,000, and the Pink Sensation dragon boat team of 24 breast cancer survivors.
