Advance online voting has opened for Oshawa's Oct. 26 municipal election. This year, online voting has replaced the previous mail-in option; paper ballots will only be available on election day.
Eligible voters -- Oshawa residents by tenancy or ownership who are 18 or older and Canadian citizens -- need a voter information letter with a registration number. Anyone who did not receive one can visit the voter assistance centre at city hall, 50 Centre St. S., open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13-17 and Oct. 19-23. One-day assistance centres run 1-6 p.m. at the Civic Recreation Complex on Oct. 16, the Donevan Recreation Complex on Oct. 17 and the Delpark Homes Centre on Oct. 19.
Online registration must be completed by 6 p.m. on election day, Oct. 26, when polls run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and online voting remains available. A proxy voter can be appointed at city hall for anyone unable to vote. Just 18.4 per cent of eligible electors voted in the 2022 Oshawa municipal election. Oshawa's mayoral race is an open seat, with Mayor Dan Carter not seeking re-election.
