Durham Regional Police say a man is facing charges following a shooting in a public plaza in Oshawa. On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, at about 2:15 a.m., East Division officers responded to an armed-person call at a plaza in the area of King Street East and Townline Road South, where police say they received several reports of a large altercation before one individual brandished a firearm and began shooting toward the victim.
Officers located multiple shell casings at the scene and, after a brief foot pursuit, took one suspect into custody after several people fled from police, the release says. No injuries have been reported, and at the time of his arrest the accused was on conditions not to possess any weapons.
Ashtoney Thompson, 29, of Oshawa, is charged with possessing a firearm without a licence, possessing a firearm while prohibited (two counts), possessing a prohibited device, possessing a loaded firearm, discharging a firearm with intent, breach of probation and failing to comply with a release order. He was held for a bail hearing. Durham police note the allegations have not been proven in court.
