John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO, proclaimed October as Circular Economy Month in Durham Region on behalf of the Works Committee of the Regional Municipality of Durham. Circular Innovation Council has expanded Waste Reduction Week beyond the third week of October into a month-long effort to explain circular-economy opportunities and benefits.
The weekly program begins with Understanding Circularity from October 1 to 4, followed by Protecting the Planet from October 5 to 11 and Building Economic Resilience from October 12 to 18. Waste Reduction Week runs from October 19 to 25, and the final theme, Strengthening Communities, runs from October 26 to 31.
The Region says this year’s themes will focus on five material streams: construction, renovation and demolition; textiles; electronic and critical minerals; packaging; and food. The weekly topics address how reuse and repair can reduce waste, conserve resources, support biodiversity and contribute to stronger supply chains and communities.
Durham Region says its 2022–2040 Long-term Waste Management Plan emphasizes rethinking and reducing waste, maximizing resource recovery and finding opportunities to create energy from waste. The Region also joined the Share, Reuse, Repair Hub operated by Circular Innovation Council, which encourages residents to swap, resell or donate items they no longer need.
The Region promotes five waste-reduction principles: rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Residents can find the campaign and local waste information through the official source link in this story’s details.
